Hello Partners in Technology Education!
Autumn is my favorite season, and this year it seems to be one of the most beautiful beginnings of the season in awhile. The start of the school year and the opening of our new Tech lab have made the first weeks fly! The students and I LOVE the new equipment and their hour each week with me has been so full of exciting educational learning opportunities. Here is an update on what we've been working on so far this year:
BK/Kindergarten: Students are learning to navigate ABCMouse and Starfall websites using a mouse. This requires fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination, and for students who are new to using a mouse, this can be a challenge. The motivation of these websites has encouraged your child to not give up and gradually master the use of the mouse, clicking and dragging and navigating between websites. The success of these skills allow the Kindergarten students to take the HPS fall assessment NWEA math test in the Tech lab.
First Grade: Students continue to use their knowledge and skills of the mouse, keyboard and internet navigation to also take the NWEA math and reading tests in the Tech lab, as well as visit the educational websites used throughout this first quarter. Sometimes an hour of Technology can be a bit much at this age, so your child may be bringing home beautiful coloring pages. Afer 35 - 40 minutes into our class, if the student has completed the learning target and needs a break from the screen, they can use old school tech to create the seasonal coloring sheets.
Second Grade: Students continue to use their knowledge and skills of the mouse, keyboard and internet navigation to also take the NWEA math, reading and Language Arts tests in the Tech lab, as well as visit the educational websites used throughout this first quarter. I have schedule 2 of the 3 tests outside the regular Tech time so your child does not lose too much Tech instruction to assessment requirements. The second graders love the websites: ABCya.com, Sumdog, and Starfall "Selected 2nd grade math skills" activities.

3rd - 5th Grade: We begin the year spending a great deal of the hour practicing keyboarding skills. Third and Fourth grade are working on mastering the Home Row and proper keyboarding techniques. The internet website we use at NW is Dance Mat Typing. This free educational resource has 12 stages students work through, starting with learning the home row keys. Each stage builds on previous lessons, introducing new letters as they progress. Students are soon touch typing like an expert!
